Society underestimated HUMSS (and even the students under it) for far too long. They don't see the need for humanities and social science courses in the "real" world because for them, the real world is a world of math and science. People have always thought that taking HUMSS is as same as applying for a low paying job. It's as if the future of HUMSS student is a predetermined life of normalcy. That's where I come in, to debunk common misconceptions about the very under appreciated HUMSS strand.
First off, HUMSS is not just for journalism and mass communication courses
HUMSS is a strand that deals with anything human. It is divided into two major classification of studies: Humanities and Social Science. Humanities deals with human experience and culture and how they view and interpret it. On the other hand, Social Science encompasses all the subjects (which is A LOT) that studies society in general and how individual players relate to it. You got psychology, politics, anthropology, geography, economics just to name a few. With that, students may take up any college coarse that utilizes these disciplines. From Law down to Urban Planning course.. the choice is yours.

There are plenty of jobs out there for HUMSS graduates. In fact, social scientists are in demand these days because of their ability to view social phenomena by incorporating different approaches and perspectives of each discipline. Students may just end up working for private companies, to medical institutions to government offices because everything learned in HUMSS can be applied to other fields of study thus, widening your career path.
No doubt, that the field of science and math has contributed are great deal of knowledge in answering problems that exists around the world. However, not all issues about our society can be solved by mere numbers and figures.

Numerous social scientists have contributed ideas into making the world safe where humans can enjoy their rights. This is because, the primary goal of social scientists is to analyzed and address issues concerning human well-fare and development. Social injustice racism, gender inequality, poverty, corruption...these are the few things that Social Science can solve - if not, contribute insights as to how to approach such issues.
For example, a study that examined political processes in Australia have shown the importance of social science in policy making. It turns out, social science has helped governments create policies to address the financial needs of the people by providing frameworks for a more equitable distribution of wealth and income. Not only that, social sciences has assisted other government process such as by providing them with intellectual input to educate government officials on how to approach a specific problem.
In another field of study, Social Science gave importance to the implications of psychology to educational development. Numerous psychologists has shared ideas on how to improve academic performance in school by focusing on the mental, emotional and social state of the students . They conduct intensive researches aimed at finding the relationship of a student's psychological well-being to their performance in school.
